Website Search Specifications define how the Website Module monitors the open web for potential brand abuse. A specification determines what to look for, where to look, and how often searches run.
A Website Search Specification can consist of keyword-based website scanning, recurring search engine queries, and image-based searches, allowing you to detect unauthorized use of your brand across text-based content and images.
Types of Website Search Specifications
A single Website Search Specification can include one or more of the following search types:
Website Keyword Searches
Scans standalone websites and webshops for home-pages containing specified brand names, product names, or other identifiers. This helps detect unauthorized sellers, fake webshops, and infringing content hosted on independent sites.
Search Engine Queries
Runs recurring keyword-based searches on search engines to identify new pages, domains, or webshops that reference your brand or products. This is useful for discovering sites that may not yet be directly linked or widely known.
Image-Based Searches
Performs recurring reverse image searches using uploaded reference images, such as product photos or marketing visuals. This helps detect websites using your images without authorization.
Components of a Website Search Specification
Each Website Search Specification consists of the following elements:
Inclusive Search Terms
Define the keywords used in website scanning and search engine queries. These are typically brand names, product names, or other unique identifiers you want to detect across web pages and search engine results.
Exclusive Search Terms
Add terms you want to exclude from results. If any of these appear in a page’s title or context, the finding is filtered out. This helps reduce irrelevant or unrelated results.
Images
Upload reference images, such as product photos or branded visuals, to enable recurring reverse image searches. These searches help detect unauthorized use of your images on third-party websites.
Description
Add internal notes or context about the purpose of the specification. This field does not influence search results but helps with internal tracking and review.
Linked IP Records
Connect relevant IP records to the specification. Linking IP records helps streamline enforcement workflows and supports complaint generation when infringements are confirmed.
Authentic URLs
Add links to official or genuine content, such as your own websites or approved resellers. These URLs serve as reference points when reviewing findings and generating complaints.
Search Frequency
Choose how often the specification runs (for example, weekly or bi-weekly), depending on how actively you want to monitor the web.

Why Website Search Specifications Matter
Well-defined specifications help you:
- Detect unauthorized use of your brand across websites, search engine results, and images
- Reduce irrelevant findings by refining keywords and exclusions
- Identify fake webshops and standalone sites early
- Support consistent review and enforcement workflows
Managing Your Website Search Specifications
Analysts can create edit, update, or delete your specifications directly within the RightHub platform. Adjusting the search terms or linked records as your brand evolves helps maintain the relevance and accuracy of your monitoring efforts.
